Sweetening the Pot

Dead Man's Hand
My husband plays poker. I do not. I get excited and want to play All The Hands! because I think there’s something beautiful waiting for me in the stack of cards resting in front of the dealer.

Inevitably, I am wrong, and I lose my money in the time it takes a two-person round of speed dating to be done.

Editing is a lot like gambling. Substitute “writer” for “gambler” and “publishing” for “survival” in the lyrics to The Gambler, and you’ll see why editing with a critical eye is so crucial to finishing your work in progress.

Now Ev’ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep.

Kenny Rogers, “The Gambler”

Now those of you in the home stretch of NaNoWriMo may not want to think about editing quite yet, but the cards are waiting for you when you’re ready to ante up.
